TREE STORIES

Gli alberi che ho fotografato in Sicilia non sono mai stati scelti per ciò che rappresentano, ma per ciò che resistono.

Sono presenze che abitano luoghi estremi: territori feriti dalle colate dell’Etna, altipiani arsi dalla calura della Sicilia centrale, coste meridionali esposte alla salsedine e al vento implacabile dello scirocco. In questi paesaggi l’albero non è un elemento decorativo del mondo, ma una forma di permanenza fragile, un corpo che negozia continuamente la propria esistenza con le forze che lo attraversano.

Ogni albero porta in sé una storia che non si lascia raccontare in modo lineare. È una storia fatta di fratture, di adattamenti, di rinascite silenziose. Non c’è eroismo in queste immagini, ma una tenacia elementare, una volontà di esistere che precede ogni linguaggio. L’albero diventa così un’entità sospesa tra ciò che è stato distrutto e ciò che, nonostante tutto, continua a crescere.

In questo lavoro non ho cercato l’immagine dell’albero, ma la sua condizione ontologica. Come scriveva Heidegger, l’essere non si manifesta nella stabilità, ma nel suo continuo esporsi al tempo. Gli alberi di Tree Stories sono presenze silenziose, esposte alla luce, al calore, alla violenza naturale, e proprio per questo capaci di rendere visibile il tempo che li attraversa. La loro forma non è mai definitiva: è il risultato di una lunga negoziazione con il luogo.

La scelta della fotografia analogica di grande formato nasce dalla necessità di instaurare un rapporto lento e fisico con il soggetto. Ogni ripresa è un atto di attesa, un confronto diretto tra il corpo dell’albero e il corpo dell’immagine. Anche la stampa, realizzata personalmente su carta ai sali d’argento a toni caldi (Foma MG Classic), partecipa di questa logica: la materia fotografica non serve a descrivere, ma a trattenere una presenza, a fissare una traccia fragile prima che si disperda.

Il libro stesso è pensato come una struttura viva. Le cuciture visibili, le carte spesse dei passe-partout, non sono soluzioni formali, ma scelte necessarie. Ogni pagina è un gesto, ogni apertura è una ferita che si richiude. Il libro non contiene le immagini: le custodisce. Come gli alberi che fotografo, anche questo oggetto nasce dall’equilibrio instabile tra resistenza e vulnerabilità.

Tree Stories non è un racconto sulla natura: è un tentativo di ascolto, per interrogare, attraverso gli alberi, la possibilità stessa di continuare a esistere nel tempo.

The trees I photographed in Sicily were never chosen for what they represent, but for what they endure.

They are presences inhabiting extreme places: territories scarred by the lava flows of Mount Etna, plateaus scorched by the heat of central Sicily, southern coasts exposed to salt, wind, and the relentless force of the sirocco. In these landscapes, the tree is not a decorative element of the world, but a fragile form of permanence—a body that continuously negotiates its own existence with the forces that traverse it.

Each tree carries within itself a story that resists linear narration. It is a story made of fractures, adaptations, and silent renewals. There is no heroism in these images, but rather an elemental tenacity, a will to exist that precedes language itself. The tree thus becomes an entity suspended between what has been destroyed and what, despite everything, continues to grow.

In this work I did not seek the image of the tree, but its ontological condition. As Heidegger wrote, being does not manifest itself through stability, but through its constant exposure to time. The trees of Tree Stories are silent presences, exposed to light, heat, and natural violence, and for this very reason capable of making visible the time that passes through them. Their form is never definitive: it is the result of a long negotiation with place.

The choice of large-format analog photography arises from the need to establish a slow, physical relationship with the subject. Each exposure is an act of waiting, a direct confrontation between the body of the tree and the body of the image. The printing process—carried out personally by the artist on warm-toned silver-gelatin paper (Foma MG Classic)—participates in this same logic: photographic matter is not used to describe, but to hold a presence, to fix a fragile trace before it disperses.

The book itself is conceived as a living structure. The visible stitching and the thick mat boards are not formal solutions, but necessary choices. Each page is a gesture; each opening is a wound that closes again. The book does not contain the images: it safeguards them. Like the trees it portrays, this object emerges from an unstable balance between resistance and vulnerability.

Tree Stories is not a narrative about nature.

It is an act of listening—an attempt to question, through trees, the very possibility of continuing to exist over time.
