STILL STREET

In Still Street, I chose to subtract street photography from its most recognizable nature: I do not seek action, the sudden gesture, or everyday reportage.

Here, the street ceases to be a documentary place and becomes an undefined, almost intangible territory.

The urban environment is not described; it is evoked.

It is not recognizable; it is a presence that fades, a margin that cannot be grasped.

What remains is a visual limbo, a point of suspension.

The human figures that pass through these images are not captured in their vulnerability or in their relationship with the world, as in the tradition of street photography.

They do not narrate an action, they do not testify to a social context, they do not perform a role.

They are presences that, for an instant, seem to reclaim their most intimate reality—a reality that does not coincide with the space they inhabit.

It is as if they were communicating something that does not concern a state of mind, but the very essence of their lives: a silent emergence, a form of truth that surfaces only for a moment and that photography manages to hold.

In this project, the street becomes a theatre without a stage and without geography.

Architectures dissolve, spaces lose consistency, urban signs turn into distant traces.

The city is perceived as an echo, not as a place.

Everything remains within a zone of indeterminacy: an elsewhere that cannot be named.

The images do not aspire to explain what happens, but to retain what appears and immediately withdraws.

Still Street is, ultimately, an exercise in listening:

an attempt to grasp life not while it moves, but while it reveals itself in stillness.

An instant that does not speak of solitude or of a relationship with the environment, but of a human condition filtered through something we cannot fully perceive—a thin veil separating what we see from what is.

These photographs do not tell the story of the street; they gather what, within the street, remains suspended.

In Still Street ho scelto di sottrarre la fotografia di strada alla sua natura più riconoscibile: non cerco l’azione, il gesto improvviso, la cronaca quotidiana.

La strada, qui, smette di essere un luogo documentario e diventa un territorio indefinito, quasi impalpabile.

L’ambiente urbano non è descritto: è evocato. Non è riconoscibile: è una presenza che sfuma, un margine che non si lascia afferrare.

Ciò che rimane è un limbo visivo, un punto di sospensione.

Le figure umane che attraversano queste immagini non sono colte nella loro vulnerabilità o nella loro relazione con il mondo, come accade nella tradizione della street photography.

Non raccontano un’azione, non testimoniano un contesto sociale, non esprimono un ruolo.

Sono presenze che, per un istante, sembrano riprendersi la loro realtà più intima — una realtà che non coincide con lo spazio in cui si trovano.

È come se comunicassero qualcosa che non riguarda lo stato d’animo, ma l’essenza stessa della loro vita: un’emersione silenziosa, una forma di verità che affiora solo per un attimo e che la fotografia trattiene.

In questo progetto la strada è un teatro senza scena e senza geografia.

Le architetture si dissolvono, gli spazi perdono consistenza, i segni urbani diventano tracce lontane.

La città viene percepita come un’eco, non come un luogo.

Tutto resta in una zona di indeterminazione: un altrove che non è possibile nominare.

Le immagini non aspirano a spiegare ciò che accade, ma a trattenere ciò che appare e subito si sottrae.

Still Street è, in fondo, un esercizio di ascolto:

un tentativo di cogliere la vita non mentre si muove, ma mentre si rivela nel suo stare immobile.

Un istante che non parla di solitudine né di rapporto con l’ambiente, ma di una condizione umana filtrata da qualcosa che non riusciamo del tutto a percepire — un velo sottile che separa ciò che vediamo da ciò che è.

Queste fotografie non raccontano la strada ma raccolgono ciò che, nella strada, resta sospeso.
