LA TERRA METAFISICA
Sicily is a land that never allows itself to be grasped. An enigma of shadows and glimmers, a threshold that opens and closes again upon those who try to inhabit it.
Verga, with his stripped-down gaze, reminded us that life is a tumble, and perhaps the Island is nothing other than this: a continuous descent between light and abyss.
I move through it as one crosses a labyrinth, knowing that every path holds a time that does not return.
Inspired by Pirandello, I am convinced that truth does not lie in a single dream, but in many dreams: it is within this restless multiplicity that my gaze takes shape.
For me, the land is never a landscape to contemplate: it is a lived space, total and often indecipherable.
A matter that never ceases to transform itself, that demands a slow, almost ascetic listening.
It is land as opening, as wandering, as question.
Here the voice of Heidegger emerges: Die Lichtung ist die Öffnung — the clearing is the opening.
It is in the clearing of light that the world, for an instant, reveals itself and, in revealing itself, withdraws.
In Sicily this happens continually: light does not illuminate — it happens.
It cuts, undoes, reveals the unexpected.
It conditions the way of living even before the way of seeing.
And photography can only feed on these often uneasy atmospheres.
From this awareness my trilogy is born: landscape, sea, cities.
Three chapters of the same unrest:
the landscape preserves what is left unsaid,
the sea guards the infinite,
the cities breathe the echo of vanished presences.
And yet, beyond every place, beyond every story, there is a tension that surpasses the very reality of the Island: metaphysicality.
A movement that goes beyond physical space and beyond the thought that claims to comprehend it.
It is in this excess that my research becomes universal: in the moment when light, matter, and shadow brush against one another and create a possible world — a world that lives only in the instant in which I look at it.
Perhaps this is the true center of my photography: a land that never ceases to question, a light that opens questions, a way of seeing that coincides with being.
And at the point where all of this converges, a threshold opens: the only one in which the image can truly be born.

La Sicilia è una terra che non si lascia mai stringere. Un enigma di ombre e bagliori, una soglia che si apre e si richiude su chi tenta di abitarla.
Verga, con il suo sguardo spoglio, ricordava che la vita è una ruzzolata, e forse l’Isola non è altro che questo: una discesa continua tra luce e abisso.
Io la percorro come si attraversa un labirinto, sapendo che ogni sentiero trattiene un tempo che non torna.
Ispirandomi a Pirandello penso proprio che la verità non sta in un solo sogno, ma in molti sogni: è in questa molteplicità inquieta che si articola il mio sguardo.
La terra, per me, non è mai un paesaggio da contemplare: è uno spazio vissuto, totale spesso indecifrabile.
Una materia che non smette di trasformarsi, che chiede un ascolto lento, quasi ascetico.
È la terra come apertura, come erranza, come domanda.
E qui affiora la voce di Heidegger: Die Lichtung ist die Öffnung — la radura è l’apertura.
È nella radura della luce che il mondo, per un istante, si mostra e, mostrandosi, si sottrae.
In Sicilia questo accade di continuo: la luce non illumina, accade.
Incide, disfa, rivela l’inatteso.
Condiziona il modo di vivere prima ancora del modo di vedere.
E la fotografia non fa che nutrirsi di questa atmosfere molte volte inquiete.
Da questa consapevolezza nasce la mia trilogia: il paesaggio, il mare, le città.
Tre capitoli di una stessa inquietudine:
- il paesaggio conserva ciò che non si dice,
- il mare custodisce l’infinito,
- le città respirano l’eco di presenze scomparse.
Eppure, oltre ogni luogo, oltre ogni storia, c’è una tensione che supera la realtà stessa dell’Isola: la metafisicità.
Un movimento che va oltre lo spazio fisico e oltre il pensiero che pretende di comprenderlo.
È in questa eccedenza che la mia ricerca diventa universale: nell’attimo in cui la luce, la materia e l’ombra si sfiorano e creano un mondo possibile, un mondo che vive solo nel momento in cui lo guardo.
Forse è qui il vero centro della mia fotografia: una terra che non smette di interrogare, una luce che apre interrogativi, un vedere che coincide con un essere.
E nel punto in cui tutto questo si unisce, si apre una soglia: la sola in cui l’immagine può davvero nascere.
