Artists’ Portraits: The Material Gaze - Collezione
In these portraits, I sought to go beyond the surface of the face.
The artists who enter my studio are not simply photographed: they are traversed by the very matter of the image. Scratches, incisions, and analog residues intertwine with their gestures and their gazes, transforming the portrait into a place of tension and revelation.
It is time that restores these images to their rightful condition.
Understanding where one wants to arrive with a portrait is never a simple act: it is not about representing a figure, but about entering into an almost fiduciary relationship with the person before me. The difficulty lies not only in perceiving the other’s essence, but in listening to the rhythm that asks to be sustained. It is like a swing that, once it takes hold of you, never lets go—carrying you along the precise waves that allow vision to emerge.
Sensations must find a body.
Each artist possesses an inner coherence, a way of being in the world, and I seek to preserve this within the photograph: I represent what they are and, at the same time, what I see coming into being within them in that very moment.
Photography does not document; it interrogates.
Every interference on the negative becomes a trace of their creative process, a wound that dialogues with their interiority, a vibration that conveys the complexity of those who live art as urgency and necessity.
These faces—interrupted and carved by light—do not seek representation, but presence.
The result is a portrait that withdraws from definition, suspended between figure and matter, between identity and transformation. They are images that do not fix a moment; they open it.

In questi ritratti ho voluto oltrepassare la superficie del volto.
Gli artisti che entrano nel mio studio non vengono semplicemente fotografati: vengono attraversati dalla materia stessa dell’immagine. Graffi, incisioni, residui analogici si intrecciano ai loro gesti e ai loro sguardi, trasformando il ritratto in un luogo di tensione e rivelazione.
È il tempo a restituire a queste immagini la loro giusta condizione.
Capire dove si vuole arrivare con un ritratto non è mai un gesto semplice: non si tratta di rappresentare una figura, ma di entrare in un rapporto quasi fiduciario con chi ho davanti. La difficoltà non è solo percepire l’essenza dell’altro, ma ascoltare il ritmo che chiede di essere mantenuto. È come uno swing che, quando ti afferra, non ti lascia più: ti trascina sulle onde esatte, quelle che permettono alla visione di emergere.
Le sensazioni devono trovare un corpo.
L’artista possiede una sua coerenza, un suo modo di stare nel mondo, e io cerco di custodirla anche nella fotografia: rappresento ciò che è e, allo stesso tempo, ciò che vedo nascere in lui in quell’istante.
La fotografia non documenta: interroga.
Ogni interferenza sul negativo diventa una traccia del loro processo creativo, una ferita che dialoga con la loro interiorità, una vibrazione che restituisce la complessità di chi vive l’arte come urgenza e necessità.
Questi volti — interrotti e scavati dalla luce — non cercano la rappresentazione, ma la presenza.
Il risultato è un ritratto che si sottrae alla definizione, sospeso tra figura e materia, tra identità e trasformazione. Sono immagini che non fissano un momento: lo aprono.
