WOMEN IN NONDESCRIPT LANDSCAPE

In Women in Nondescript Landscape, I chose a landscape devoid of identity in order to construct a vision in which female figures become the reflection of a social condition that is often fragile and invisible. It is a space without narrative anchors, a territory that could dissolve the very meaning of the image—empty it, absorb it. The risk lay precisely there: that the indistinct might erase presence, that the landscape might turn the body into a shadow.

But this did not happen.

Within this suspension, I came to understand that the landscape does not weaken the figure; on the contrary, it reveals it. The women who inhabit these images do not describe a place: they transform it. They are presences that emerge and withdraw, traversed by the matter of the film, by scratches, abrasions, and analog interferences that become part of their bodies and their histories.

The landscape is not a mere backdrop, but a zone of transition in which identity is not given in advance; it takes shape in the very act of appearing. The relationship between body and space is a restrained movement, a distance that becomes rhythm, a posture that turns into a sign.

These figures do not occupy the landscape; they listen to it, absorb it, carry it into another dimension—suspended between memory, ritual, and a form of silent community. Communication becomes social: every gesture, every shadow, every analog trace points toward an interpretation that does not rely on narrative aesthetics, but finds its meaning in depth, in what moves beneath the surface.

What ultimately remains is neither a place nor a face, but a shared vibration: the perception of a fragile yet powerful bond between body, matter, and vision—always in relation to that social dimension that runs through every artistic gesture.

These images do not seek a single, definitive meaning. Instead, they offer an open space, an emotional territory that takes shape in the gaze of the viewer.

It is there, within that opening, that landscape becomes figure and figure becomes landscape.

In Women in Nondescript Landscape ho scelto un paesaggio privo di identità per creare una visione in cui figure femminili diventano il riflesso di una condizione sociale spesso fragile e invisibile. È uno spazio senza appigli narrativi, un territorio che potrebbe dissolvere il senso stesso dell’immagine, svuotarla, inghiottirla. Il rischio era proprio questo: che l’indistinto cancellasse la presenza, che il paesaggio trasformasse il corpo in un’ombra.

Ma non è accaduto.

Dentro questa sospensione ho compreso che il paesaggio non indebolisce la figura; al contrario, la rivela. Le donne che abitano queste immagini non descrivono un luogo: lo trasformano. Sono presenze che emergono e si ritirano, attraversate dalla materia della pellicola, dai graffi, dalle abrasioni, dalle interferenze analogiche che diventano parte del loro corpo e della loro storia.

Il paesaggio non è un semplice sfondo, ma una zona di transizione in cui l’identità non è data in anticipo: si forma nell’atto stesso dell’apparire. La relazione tra corpo e spazio è un movimento trattenuto, una distanza che si fa ritmo, una postura che diventa segno.

Queste figure non occupano il paesaggio; lo ascoltano, lo assorbono, lo portano in una dimensione altra, sospesa tra memoria, ritualità e una forma di comunità silenziosa. La comunicazione si fa sociale: ogni gesto, ogni ombra, ogni traccia analogica rimanda a un’interpretazione che non ha bisogno di estetica narrativa, ma che trova il proprio senso in profondità, in ciò che si muove sotto la superficie.

Ciò che resta, alla fine, non è un luogo e nemmeno un volto, ma una vibrazione condivisa: la percezione di un legame fragile e potente tra corpo, materia e visione, sempre in relazione con quella dimensione sociale che attraversa ogni gesto artistico.

Queste immagini non cercano un significato univoco. Offrono invece uno spazio aperto, un territorio emotivo che si costruisce nello sguardo di chi osserva.

È lì, in quel varco, che il paesaggio diventa figura e la figura diventa paesaggio.
