Presence

In Presence, I approach portraiture not as a representation of identity, but as a condition of appearance.
I am not interested in describing a face or recounting a biography: what I seek is a presence that manifests itself within the image, regardless of the recognition of the subject.

In this series, the portrait becomes a site of perceptual concentration. The figure is not asked to perform or to expose itself, but to emerge through the materiality of the image. Light, tonal density, and the time of observation construct a relationship in which the subject is never fully given, but becomes present precisely through its withdrawal.

Photography thus frees itself from a descriptive function and takes the form of a perceptual event. Each portrait does not fix an identity, but suspends it, allowing the face to transform into a presence that exceeds form. The photographic material — grain, depth of blacks, vibration of light — is not an aesthetic effect, but the very place where this presence takes shape.

I work in analog because this process affords a time of attention and listening that I consider essential. The portrait is not captured, but received. The print marks the moment in which the image stabilizes as a concrete experience: not as a reproduction, but as the concluding act of the work.

Presence brings together portraits that do not ask to be interpreted, but encountered.
They do not propose an identity to be deciphered, but a presence to be traversed by the gaze. In this sense, portraiture becomes for me an exercise in proximity: a way of restoring to photography its capacity to render visible what resists naming, yet persists in the time of observation.

In Presence lavoro sul ritratto non come rappresentazione di un’identità, ma come condizione di apparizione.
Non mi interessa descrivere un volto, né raccontare una biografia: ciò che cerco è una presenza che si manifesta nell’immagine, indipendentemente dal riconoscimento del soggetto.

Il ritratto, in questa serie, diventa un luogo di concentrazione percettiva. La figura non è chiamata a esporsi, ma a emergere attraverso la materia dell’immagine. Luce, densità tonale e tempo di osservazione costruiscono una relazione in cui il soggetto non è mai completamente dato, ma si rende presente nel suo stesso sottrarsi.

La fotografia si libera così dalla funzione descrittiva e assume la forma di un evento percettivo. Ogni ritratto non fissa un’identità, ma la sospende, lasciando che il volto si trasformi in una presenza che eccede la forma. La materia fotografica — grana, profondità dei neri, vibrazione della luce — non è un elemento estetico, ma il luogo in cui questa presenza prende corpo.

Lavoro in analogico perché questo processo mi consente un tempo di attenzione e di ascolto che considero essenziale. Il ritratto non viene catturato, ma accolto. La stampa è il momento in cui l’immagine si stabilizza come esperienza concreta, non come riproduzione, ma come atto conclusivo del lavoro.

Presence raccoglie ritratti che non chiedono di essere interpretati, ma incontrati.
Non propongono un’identità da decifrare, ma una presenza da attraversare con lo sguardo. In questo senso, il ritratto diventa per me un esercizio di prossimità: un modo per restituire alla fotografia la sua capacità di rendere visibile ciò che non si lascia nominare, ma che insiste nel tempo dell’osservazione.
