Technical and Archival Standards

The works by Attilio Scimone are conceived and produced according to strict technical, material, and archival standards, developed over decades of continuous practice in analog photography and printing.
Printing is not considered a secondary or reproductive phase, but a central act of the work, where aesthetic, material, and temporal decisions are definitively fixed.

All works are intended for long-term preservation, institutional collections, and responsible private collecting.

Printing as a Material Act

All photographic works are produced through analog chemical processes, personally executed or directly supervised by Attilio Scimone.
Printing is understood as a material and perceptual act, in which image, support, chemistry, and time converge.

The artist works with historically established photographic processes, including:

– Gelatin silver printing (black-and-white, fibre-based papers)

– Chromogenic colour processes (C-print)

– Cibachrome / Ilfochrome

– Polaroid and Polaroid Transfer

– Direct interventions on the photographic surface (engraving, toning, material alteration)

Each process is chosen in relation to the conceptual and material requirements of the specific body of work.

Materials and Papers

All materials are selected for their stability, tonal depth, and archival reliability.

For black-and-white works, fibre-based baryta papers are used, including Ilford and Foma papers historically recognised for museum-grade printing.
For Fine Art Giclée works, archival pigment inks on Hahnemühle papers are employed, exclusively for projects conceived within that process.

No hybrid or commercial shortcuts are adopted. Each work is produced in coherence with its original technical and historical context.

Vintage Prints and Archival Continuity

A significant portion of the archive consists of vintage prints, defined as prints made by the artist close in time to the original exposure.
These works preserve not only the image, but also the historical conditions of their production.

Between 1980 and 2004, Attilio Scimone systematically printed and preserved a wide body of works in black-and-white, colour, and instant photography, anticipating contemporary collecting practices through a conscious effort to build and expand a material archive, rather than producing on demand.

All vintage works have been preserved according to international conservation standards and remain in excellent condition.

Conservation and Preservation

All works are stored, handled, and archived according to best practices for photographic conservation, including:

– controlled environmental conditions

– acid-free storage materials

minimal and supervised handling

separation between storage, working, and exhibition copies where applicable

The works are conceived to remain stable and legible over time, suitable for institutional conservation policies and long-term archival responsibility.

Editions and Uniqueness

Works are available as unique pieces or limited editions, clearly defined and controlled.
Editioning is conceived not as a market device, but as a structural element of the work, consistent with museum acquisition standards.

Each work is identified, documented, and archived within the artist’s studio.

Certificates and Documentation

Every work is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, issued by the Attilio Scimone Studio.
Certificates include detailed technical information, materials, processes, dates, and identifying data necessary for cataloguing, acquisition, and archival management.

Copies of all certificates are retained in the artist’s archive, ensuring continuity of documentation and traceability over time.

Institutional standards

These technical and archival standards reflect a long-term commitment to photography as a material practice, grounded in responsibility toward the image, its support, and its future conservation.

The works are conceived for:

– museum collections

– institutional archives

– foundations

– advanced private collections

where durability, coherence, and material integrity are essential criteria.
